Century Mile and Horse Racing Alberta would like to extend their congratulations to Yves Turcotte on being named the 2026 Avelino Gomez Memorial Award recipient. The Avelino Gomez Memorial Award is one of the most prestigious and treasured honours in Canadian Thoroughbred racing. It is presented annually to a jockey who is Canadian-born, Canadian-raised, or has been a regular rider in the country for at least five years, who has made significant and lasting contributions to the sport both on and off the track. Yves began his career as a jockey in 1980. Hailing from the Turcotte family of racing royalty, he is the youngest of 14 siblings, including his brothers Ron, Rudy, Roger and Noel. This award comes 42 years after his brother, Ron Turcotte, legendary jockey of Secretariat, received this award in 1984. Yves made over 11,100 starts during his 17-year riding career, with 1347 winners, including standout victories in the 1988 Canadian Derby aboard Elmtex, and the 1996 Alberta Derby atop Letkingo. Following his retirement, Yves became a steward and has remained in the role for 17 years, right here in Alberta. Yves contributions to the sport are truly admirable and appreciated by the entire horse racing community. Thank you to all those who joined us today for the official trophy presentation!
