The road to the Canadian Derby is heating up! Last Friday saw one of the final preps for the 97th Running of the Canadian Derby and the Century Casino Oaks coming up on Saturday, August 22, with the Count Lathum and Sonoma Stakes. After a thrilling stretch run, TISUM joined the conversation, edging out BIG CURL right at the wire in his Century Mile debut. The three year old Kentucky bred gelding by Caravaggio out of the Flat Out mare, Beehive Hairdo, was a $20,000 claim out of Churchill Downs. Tisum is owned by Chris Duggan, trained by Dave Nicholson and was ridden by Jose Asencio. Meanwhile, a familiar face delivered as the heavy favourite in the Sonoma, with PLAYFUL extending her win streak to three for trainer Gonzalo Anderson. The New York bred filly by Violence is owned by her breeders, Newtown Anner Stud Farm, and was ridden by Assiniboia based jockey, Antonio Whitehall. Next up on the road to the Canadian Derby is the Manitoba Derby, which runs at Assiniboia Downs on Monday, August 3. The Canadian Derby is coming up on Saturday, August 22.
