"The Downs history blog was “born” in 2012. This week’s story will be edition #286 and that’s a lot of history," writes ASD historian Bob Gates. "Whatever I know about the racing game has come from the good people of the backstretch. So where am I going with this? I have learned from some of the best, and I’d like to introduce you to a few. I didn’t always realize it, but they are all sportswriters. Yes sir, all were newspaper guys. "In no particular order, let me tell you a little bit about the writers who have been such a positive influence on the history blog."
