Happy Birthday to... us! On Wednesday, June 16, 1897, the gates opened for the very first day of racing here at Fort Erie Race Track. The inaugural race was won by a horse named Ellesmere, ridden by jockey Sullivan, who's first name has been lost to history. Second went to Wordsworth, third to Miss Lillian. The winner pocketed a $300 purse, with $75 and $25 for the place and show prizes.

It is with heavy hearts that we mourn the passing of our beloved “Queen of Fort Erie,” jockey Francine Villeneuve. A trailblazing pioneer, fierce competitor, and true ambassador of our sport, Francine will never be forgotten at Fort Erie Race Track. She etched her name in the record books by securing her 1,000th career win on our track; a milestone that cemented her legacy as the first Canadian female jockey to reach that extraordinary mark. Her grace, determination, and love for the game inspired generations of riders and fans alike. Rest in peace, Francine. You will be deeply missed. Our thoughts are with her family, friends, and all whose lives she touched.
