👑🟣 Prince of Wales Stakes Update 🟣👑 Enhancements to various breeder incentives and bonuses for Ontario horses will boost purse levels at Fort Erie Race Track for its signature event, the Prince of Wales Stakes card, by $200,000 this season. As part of the recently announced $35 million investment from the Ontario government, $5 million is being directed into Ontario Racing’s Thoroughbred Improvement Program. With a newly included $100,000 Ontario Bred bonus, the 2026 Prince of Wales Stakes purse will increase to $500,000 while the two Ontario Sired Heritage Series races that day – the Rondeau Bay Stakes and Lake Erie Stakes – will both increase to $150,000 each. Combined with the remaining four stakes that day – the Molson Cup, the Puss N Boots Cup, the Richard Grubb Cup and the Cinquemie Essai Cup – the total prize money for the Prince of Wales card will reach a new high of nearly $1 million. The Prince of Wales Stakes is the second jewel of the Canadian Triple Crown, and is contested at Fort Erie Race Track following the King’s Plate at Woodbine. The 91st Prince of Wales Stakes will hit the historic border oval on Labour Day, Monday, September 7.

🚨 RACING UPDATE 🚨 With additional investment from the Ontario government secured, Fort Erie Race Track has immediately implemented a purse increase to all races for the remainder of the 2026 season. In June, a new funding agreement brought a $35 million annual investment into Ontario’s horse racing industry, of which $10 million has been allocated to thoroughbred horse racing participants, including breeders and trainers. Fort Erie Race Track is one of only two thoroughbred tracks in the province. The additional funding will allow Fort Erie to increase purses by 15 per cent, bringing an average race card up from about $127,000 to more than $146,000.
