In an attempt to reduce the harm associated with gambling, the government implemented a plan to reduce the number of VLTs by 15% beginning in 2006. The plans also included reducing the speed of gameplay of VLTs and changing the daily hours of operation to noon to midnight.
In 2008, St. John's Racing & Entertainment Centre expanded its offerings by securing a new TAB and foreign race intertrack betting contacts, which allowed it to offer betting in additional markets.
