Saskatchewan Race Wagering

The Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority (SLGA) licenses and regulates pari-mutuel betting within the province with oversight from the Canadian Pari-Mutuel Agency. The closure of Queensbury Downs in Regina in 2003 resulted in a drop in track handle in the following years.

On 12 March 2010, the province's newest horse racing track, West Meadows Raceway, opened its doors. West Meadows Raceway became the third horse racing track in the province, joining Marquis Downs and Yorkton Exhibition Park.

In 2012, grants to fund horse racing were eliminated, thus removing all funding to the standardbred industry.

In 2013, the West Meadows Raceway did not host any live racing because it was unable to secure an HMA (Home Market Area) license to hold the live meets. An HMA license allows a track to operate simulcast and telephone account betting (TAB). The SLGA issues these licenses on an annual basis. The only HMA license awarded was to the Saskatoon area, making the thoroughbred track located there the sole recipient of all offtrack revenue for Saskatchewan.
