Ontario Sports Betting

In March 2019, Ontario Finance Minister Vic Fedeli sent a letter to federal Finance Minister Bill Morneau asking for “an amendment to the Criminal Code of Canada that would legalize single event sports wagering in Canada,” citing that estimates indicate illegal single event sports betting generates CAD 110 million per year in revenue in Ontario alone.

In June 2021, the Senate passed Bill C-218, the Safe and Regulated Sports Betting Act, which amenedd the Criminal Code to allow provincial governments to determine when and how to conduct and manage single-event sports betting offerings within their borders.

In February 2022, the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (OLG) launched PROLINE, which allows sports bettors to place single-game wagers at approximately 10,000 retail locations in Ontario.

In October 2022, retail sportsbooks launched in Ontario.
